Warm Roof Screws explained

Warm roof screws are specialist long screws used when fixing materials through a warm roof insulation system into the structural timber beneath.

What is a warm roof?

A warm roof is a roof construction where the insulation is installed above the roof structure, rather than between or underneath the rafters.

A typical arrangement might be:

Roof covering → battens → counter-battens → insulation → timber roof structure

Because the insulation can be quite thick, you need long fixings to pass through all these layers and still achieve sufficient embedment into the timber.

WHAT ARE WARM ROOF SCREWS?

What are warm roof screws used for?

They're commonly used to secure:

  • Rigid insulation boards above rafters

  • Counter-battens through insulation

  • Roofing battens through insulation

  • Timber roofing systems

  • Warm roof build-ups on pitched roofs

  • Some flat-roof insulation systems, depending on the design

The screw passes through the insulation and into the structural timber, providing the mechanical connection.

Why are they so long?

This is one of their defining features.

For example, if you have 100 mm of insulation, plus battens and other layers, a standard timber screw may not be long enough. Warm roof screws can therefore be available in substantially longer lengths, such as 200–400 mm+, depending on the application.

The important point isn't simply the overall length—the screw needs to achieve the required minimum embedment into the supporting timber after passing through the insulation and other materials.

What makes them different from ordinary screws?

Warm roof screws are generally designed with features such as:

  • Very long lengths

  • High tensile strength

  • Threads designed for secure fixing into timber

  • Corrosion-resistant coatings suitable for roofing environments

  • Sometimes a partial thread or specialised thread geometry to help clamp the layers together

Some systems use screws installed at an angle, rather than straight down, to provide the required structural performance and resistance to sliding or wind loads.

The most important thing: length

Warm roof screws are normally specified by the overall screw length, but you need to consider the entire roof build-up.

For example:

150 mm insulation + 50 mm counter-batten = 200 mm

You then need enough additional length to achieve the required penetration into the structural rafter.

So, a screw might need to be 250–300 mm long, rather than simply selecting a 200 mm screw.

The exact length and fixing pattern should follow the roof system manufacturer's specification and structural requirements.
