What screw and size do I need?
Screws and sizes differ depending on the application. It’s always best to identify the type of job you are carrying out. This could be wood, metal, drywall, decking or concrete, each type requires a different screw. The size again also depends on the job you are carrying out but generally consider the length of your project, you don’t want the screw appearing out the other side.

What’s the importance of wall plugs?
Wall plugs, also known as anchors or rawlplugs, are small plastic or metal inserts that are used to provide support and secure fixings into various types of walls, such as brick, concrete, or plasterboard. Their importance lies in several key factors:
- Wall plugs provide support and stability by expanding within the wall material ensuring the wall fixing remains securely in place when weight or pressure is distributed.
- Prevents damage to the wall surface, without wall plugs fixings can become loose over time causing the wall to crack and the hole to get bigger when weight is applied.
- Distribution of load, wall plugs distribute the load over a large area of the wall which is important when fixing heavy objects to avoid failure and injury.
-
Why are wall plugs different colours?
Wall plugs are available in different colours to indicate their size and suitability for specific applications.
The colour-coding system helps users easily identify the correct plug size and type for the material they are fixing into. Here’s how the colour-coding system typically works:
Red: Red wall plugs are typically larger and designed for use with larger screws or bolts. They are suitable for fixing heavier items into solid materials like brick or concrete.
Yellow: Yellow wall plugs are medium-sized and suitable for use with medium-sized screws. They are commonly used for fixing objects into materials like plasterboard or hollow bricks.
Blue: Blue wall plugs are smaller and designed for use with smaller screws. They are often used for lightweight fixings in materials like plasterboard or softwood.
Brown: Brown wall plugs are similar in size to yellow plugs but are made of more rigid material, making them suitable for use in harder materials like wood or masonry.
Green: Green wall plugs are often used for specialist applications or are made from environmentally friendly materials. They may also indicate plugs designed for outdoor use or specific types of fixings.
This colour-coding system helps ensure a secure and reliable fixing, reducing the risk of damage or failure.

How do I properly maintain and care for my DIY tools and equipment?
To ensure longevity to your tools there are a few requirements you should follow:
Regular cleaning is a must. After each use wipe down any tools with a clean cloth to remove dirt, dust, and debris. If tools get wet dry them thoroughly to avoid any rust.
Inspect regularly for any damage and lubricate any moving parts to ensure a smooth operation.
Storing tools correctly after use is also a necessity. Purchasing a tool bag keeps them clean, rust free, organised and easily accessible.

What’s the difference between Pozi Head and Slotted Head?
Pozi head and slotted head refer to two different types of screw heads. Pozi head screws have a cross-shaped indentation, allowing for better torque transmission and reducing the likelihood of the screwdriver slipping. Slotted head screws, on the other hand, have a single straight line across the top, requiring a flat-blade screwdriver for installation. While both types have their uses, pozi head screws are generally preferred and the most common for their enhanced stability during installation.
-
Why are washers important?
Washers play a crucial role in securing nuts and bolts effectively. They distribute the load of the fastener over a wider area, reducing the risk of damage to the material being fastened by providing added stability. Additionally, washers help prevent loosening due to vibrations, corrosion, or thermal expansion. Washers are the perfect solution to enhance the integrity and longevity of the connection between nuts and bolts.

How can I stop damp and mould?
Damp and mould can become a nuisance to eliminate, however below are several options which can be used to prevent damp and mould from returning:
- Damp proof membrane can be used to prevent rising damp and groundwater from entering. The membrane acts as a barrier sheet to protect against moisture eliminating mould and damp.
- Use moisture-absorbing products like silica gel or dehumidifiers, particularly in areas prone to dampness.
- Damp Proof Course is a well-known product to protect against moisture, it is generally used on brick or block walls to protect buildings, paintwork and structural issues from rising damp.
- There are various mould inhibitors available in the form of sprays, paints, or additives that can be applied to surfaces prone to mould growth. These products help prevent mould from forming or spreading on walls, ceilings, and other surfaces.
- Anti-condensation paints are designed to reduce condensation buildup on walls and ceilings by improving surface insulation and thermal performance. They help mitigate the conditions that promote mould growth.
- Sealants and caulks can be used to seal gaps and cracks around windows, doors, and other areas where moisture may enter the home. This helps prevent water infiltration and subsequent dampness.

What is Drylining?
Drylining is a technique used to create a smooth, flat surface on walls and ceilings. It involves attaching plasterboard directly onto the existing wall or ceiling structure, rather than applying wet plaster onto to the surface. Drylining offers several advantages, including faster installation, minimal drying time, and the ability to conceal wiring, insulation, and pipework behind the boards. Additionally, it provides a versatile base for painting, wallpapering, or applying decorative finishes. Using the correct screws for drylining is also important to ensure a safe and secure fixing for years to follow.
